Currently Basson & Basson Architects have two offices. The one office is situated in Cape Town & the other in Worcester. The practice principals are brothers Wilhelm & Le Roux Basson, both originally from Worcester. Wilhelm graduated from the University of Port Elizabeth in 1991.
Le Roux graduated from the University of Port Elizabeth in 1996. Wilhelm runs the Worcester practice since August 1994 & Le Roux runs the Cape Town practice since November 1999.

Basson & Basson Architects has been involved with various projects ranging from residential,commercial,place of worship,retirement villages,industrial buildings,vehicle showrooms,schools,hotel accommodation & offices.

Basson & Basson Architects-Cape Town was commissioned by Blake & Anandi Griffin to design a dwelling on erf 1 835.The site is situated on a steep slope in the heart of Camps Bay with magnificent sea & mountain views. There was an existing dwelling on the erf & the challenge was to treat the design in such a way that it is perceived as a brand new dwelling.

The client’s brief was to design a spacious dwelling which would utilize the panoramic views that are available. Also, the dwelling had to accommodate an entertainment life style with open plan reception areas at different levels which could connect to outdoor living. There was also a requirement for the dwelling to be able to be divided into separate self contained “living quarters”.

The dwelling basically consists of four levels. At street level there are four garages and an entrance quart cladded in natural stone. A flight of external stairs runs up the side of the garages to the second level. At this level one finds a self contained “flatlet” with private swimming pool , timber decks ,Jacuzzi & Zen roof garden created above the garages. A series of timber screens make this unit completely private & isolated from the rest of the dwelling.

The stairs continue up the side of the dwelling & terminate in a court yard with water feature & vegetation. The main entrance is at the third level with open plan kitchen,dining room & lounge at a split level. The split level ensures sea views from both the dining room & kitchen.The dining room flows to an outside timber deck via an aluminum & glass stacking door. In the lounge two large aluminum & glass doors stack away from a corner to connect the lounge with a large external entertainment deck area with rim flow swimming pool with panoramic sea & mountain views. Also at this level one will find three bedrooms all with sea views & connected to a covered timber deck patio via aluminium & glass stacking doors. One of the bedrooms is self contained with it’s own kitchenette , en-suite bathroom & separate entrance.

A stair case set in a double volume space takes one to the fourth & final level. A timber & glass stacking door separates the third & the fourth levels.The fourth level has a separate external stair case.A large entertainment area with built-in stainless steel braai,bar area & separate kitchenette is found at the fourth level.A large aluminum & glass stacking door opens up onto a outside entertainment timber deck with Jacuzzi, again with magnificent mountain & sea views. At this level there are three bedrooms all with sea views. These rooms are all connected to a timber balcony via stacking doors.The main bedroom has a separate walk-in dressing area & en-suite bathroom.

The nature of the slope of the site results in the dwelling being “set” into the mountain side. This creates a cascading effecting of the dwelling down the slope of the site. This also ensures that maximum views are created from every level. The use of natural stone cladding at entrance, swimming pool & water feature together with the use of steel & timber at pergolas, timber decking at all external areas & large areas of glass create a contemporary, timeless architecture.
